Things I Like: Sculptural, Whimsical, and Weird
Something I want to visit, something I can make, and something back in stock
Making things has taken a backseat during the last few weeks, when life went from 0 to 100 as soon as the sun came out. Busy season kicked off with a trip to Chattanooga, and then we went to Mexico. While there, a huge order of fabric arrived on our doorstep that I haven’t paid any attention to yet. Three yards of creamy canvas, three yards of black linen, two yards of gingham gauze. All of it, just sitting in folded piles in my sewing studio. Meanwhile, I’m inundated with ideas and inspiration. What a dilemma. Here’s what's catching my eye lately.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West
Steve recently got to tour this Frank Lloyd Wright site in Scottsdale, Arizona, and I lived vicariously through his photos. I don’t know if I could reside in one of FLW’s spaces. I’d probably go insane. But I can certainly appreciate his ingenuity. I love the stone, the primary colors, and the sculptural furniture. All of these elements were sourced locally and used intentionally to evoke the natural environment. This massive desert home was where the architect wintered and spent many creative hours. Maybe one day I’ll get back to Arizona to visit.
Hannah Glenn Swirl Bag
As soon as Hannah Glenn dropped this bag style, I added it to my list of sewing projects. The monochrome is made more interesting with the contrast of silky and matte fabrics, and it’s just simple enough that I think I could handle it on my sewing machine. I’m looking at using this pattern and then making a long strip of ruffles to stitch on (whenever I have the time). Wish me luck.
Handmade Steel Fish Clips
Why is everyone, me included, obsessed with fish right now? Tinned fish, fish motifs, etc. Trendy or not, aren’t these little fish clips the cutest things you’ve ever seen? They were sold out a few weeks ago but now they’re back in stock online at Boston General Store. I would use them to seal coffee bags and keep papers together. Maybe I’d even use them as hair clips.
Sculptural, whimsical, and weird: You can put that on my gravestone.
