I saw a tweet today encouraging journalists who are struggling (like me) that they’re not alone; AI, SEO, algorithmic shifts, and other changes are making things weird right now. And I’m genuinely worried. I’ve never considered leaving journalism, but will I be forced to? How are you feeling? Have you ever gone through this process before of wanting to or being forced to leave your field? How did that end up? I have so many questions.
These thoughts have been circling me for a couple years now—they're complicated! Opportunities have shrunken and changed, and it's been hard not to take that personally, given my interests and skillset. I still can't tell if I was forced from the industry, or if I wanted to leave... or if it was a serendipitous combination of both... all of which has been the most perfect question/thought fodder for a certain Craft essay I'm writing :)
I worry about these things every single day! It's scary and I don't know what the answer is, except machines can never replace the thoughtful, emotional, perspective of humans. It feels counterintuitive, but I think the response has to be us slowing down and putting out deeper work, versus trying to hamster wheel and compete. Practicing my pasta making though, just in case we all get replaced by AI 😬
