I tend to have black-and-white thinking in regards to material literacy, and while I am pretty puritanical about natural fibers only, there is a place where synthetics will result in a more functional, stable garment that ultimately ends in less consumption overall.
Absolutely! There is no world in which we can replace all the amazing things that synthetics have brought us. It’s all a balance, right? I’m working on a really amazing story right now about the company Reju. They’re separating polyester from other materials (mostly cotton) and turning it into new poly material through a chemical process. If we can figure out a way to use the excess we already have, there’s no reason to create more.
