Honing Her Craft is a newsletter by me, Amelia Arvesen. I’m a Portland, OR-based freelance journalist writing for outlets like Outside Magazine, Trails, and Women’s Health. I’m an outdoorsy indoors person. Or an indoorsy outdoors person. This newsletter keeps readers updated about my published work, allows me to share about my other creative pursuits, connects me with people like you, and helps me slow down in this distracting world. You can find posts about my writing and freelancing seasons, learning through experiences, following my intuition, things capturing my attention, and taking care of mind and body.

You will hear from me on Fridays. Free subscribers receive a digest of monthly updates with my latest published work, discoveries, and offerings. Paid subscribers ($45/year or $5/month) hear from me up to four times a month.

Here’s everything a paid subscription includes:

  • Full archive including personal reflections, columns, and offerings

  • The monthly design-centric dispatch called Things I Like

  • Access to comments and discussion threads

  • My eternal gratitude for showing up and supporting me

My intention with Honing Her Craft is to create a container for my reflections on showing up in the world as a curious and creative being—sometimes that means as a freelance journalist, sometimes just as a person who’s simply trying to make sense of the world we create for ourselves. However you found me, I’m grateful you’re here.

During the first two years of this newsletter, I interviewed more than 30 women about their creative practices, from journalism to graphic design. Conversations inevitably gravitated toward resisting capitalism, fighting for compensation, and listening to our bodies. You can find those interviews here. I still write often about those topics related to my own freelance business and creative practice, like in this essay about the self talk that makes or breaks our creativity.
